Buying an abaya: which fabric suits which season?

Vrouw kiest een beige abaya bij kledingrek — abaya kopen, welke stof past bij welk seizoen ZYNA

The same abaya can be unbearably hot in July and far too thin in January. The cut stays the same — it is the fabric that makes the difference. This guide helps you choose by season.

Why fabric matters more than cut

An abaya covers the whole body. That means the fabric determines how much heat you retain, how well moisture is wicked away and how the garment moves. A wrong fabric choice shows within an hour; a wrong cut often only after a day.

In short: natural fibres breathe, synthetic fibres insulate. That is the whole principle.

Spring: light fabrics with hold

Changeable weather calls for versatility. Cupro is ideal here: it breathes, falls softly and never feels clammy. Light crêpe also works well — firm enough to hold its shape in the wind, light enough for sunny days.

Choose muted colours that combine with everything: taupe, soft green, greige.

Summer: natural fibres only

This is the season when a wrong choice shows the most.

Linen and linen blends are unmatched in the heat. They wick moisture away and dry fast. The light crease is part of the deal — it is the price of coolness, and these days simply beautiful too.

Cupro remains the best choice if you want a smoother look. It is cool to the touch and does not cling.

Cotton voile is light and breathable, but always check the opacity — thin cotton becomes translucent in bright sun.

What you had better avoid: polyester, satin and heavy nidha. They retain heat and do not let air through.

Our sets in cupro and linen are designed for exactly this purpose.

Autumn: transition fabrics

Medium nidha comes into its own here: enough weight for cooler days, not so heavy that you feel stifled indoors. Viscose blends are also practical.

This is also the season to start layering: a light abaya over a thin jumper gives more flexibility than one thick garment.

Colours: cocoa brown, olive, ink blue — shades that have depth without being gloomy.

Winter: weight and insulation

Heavy nidha is the classic: densely woven, falls straight, retains heat. Wool blends go a step further, but require careful care.

Velvet is the festive winter variant — warm, luxurious, and perfect for evening occasions.

Practical tip: in winter, choose a slightly looser cut, so that a layer fits underneath without pulling.

Festive fabrics: independent of the season

Organza, pleating and satin belong to occasions, not to a particular time of year. That said: satin and velvet look better in evening light, organza and pleating work in the daytime too.

The quick comparison

  • Linen — summer. Very breathable, creases lightly.
  • Cupro — spring, summer, autumn. Breathable, falls like silk, delicate wash.
  • Crêpe — spring, autumn. Firm, crease-free, versatile.
  • Nidha — autumn, winter. Opaque, falls straight, easy to care for.
  • Velvet — winter, evening. Warm and festive.
  • Organza and pleating — occasions. Light and airy, usually with an underlayer.

The whole year with four abayas

You do not need ten pieces. A workable base:

  1. One in linen or cupro for the warm months
  2. One in crêpe for the mid-seasons
  3. One in nidha for winter
  4. One festive piece for occasions

Keep to one colour family, and everything stays combinable with the same scarves.

In conclusion

When buying, look first at the composition, then at the photo. A well-chosen fabric is worn with pleasure for years; a wrong one stays hanging in the wardrobe.
