The jilbab: how to choose and wear it every day

Femme en jilbab taupe deux pièces — le jilbab, comment le choisir et le porter au quotidien ZYNA

Between the abaya, the khimar and the jilbab, the names often get mixed up. Yet each answers a different need. Here is what a jilbab really is, how to choose one, and why it appeals to more and more women who are short on time.

What exactly is a jilbab?

The jilbab is a loose garment that covers the head and the body in a single ensemble. It generally consists of two matching parts — an upper part that incorporates the head covering, and a long skirt — or of a single slip-on piece.

Its distinctive feature: you have nothing to coordinate. No scarf to match, no drape to get right. You slip it on, and the outfit is complete.

Jilbab, abaya, khimar: the differences

  • The abaya covers the body only. It is worn with a separate hijab, which leaves full freedom of coordination.
  • The khimar is a cape that starts at the top of the head and comes down to the hips, the knees or lower. It is worn over another outfit.
  • The jilbab combines both functions in a single coherent piece.

In practice: the abaya offers the most variations, the jilbab the most simplicity, the khimar sits between the two.

The main styles

The two-piece jilbab

The most widespread. A covering top plus a matching skirt. Major advantage: you can adjust each part separately, and replace one without the other if it wears out.

The one-piece jilbab

A single envelope, slipped on over the head. The quickest to put on, the most fluid visually. In return, the length must be perfectly suited — there is no adjustment possible.

The yoked jilbab

With a gathered band or elastic around the face. This is the most stable: it does not slip even in movement, which makes it ideal if you are active.

Choosing the right fabric

Thick jersey — the most practical for everyday. It holds on its own, does not slip, and is machine washable.

Nidha — more structured, more dressed-up. It falls vertically and gives a clean look.

Crêpe — the good compromise: firm enough to hold, supple enough to move.

To avoid — very slippery fabrics such as satin: on a jilbab, the whole structure rests on the grip of the fabric.

To understand how each fabric behaves, our fabric guide details the real differences.

The measurements that count

  1. The total length — measured from the top of the head, not from the shoulder. That is the major difference from an abaya.
  2. The depth of the upper part — it determines how far the coverage comes down over the bust.
  3. The face opening — too tight, it becomes uncomfortable; too wide, it slips.

Our measurement guide will help you take these reference points correctly.

Who is the jilbab ideal for?

If you are short on time in the morning. One piece, thirty seconds, outfit finished.

If you travel. It replaces several pieces in a suitcase and requires no coordination.

If you are starting out. It avoids learning the drape, often frustrating in the first weeks.

If you are looking for maximum coverage without multiplying layers.

Its limits, honestly

The jilbab offers few variations: it is hard to refresh a look with the same piece. It is also less suited to environments where you go in and out often, since you cannot simply remove a layer.

Finally, it forgives size mistakes less than an abaya, whose loose cut absorbs more discrepancies.

Care

Wash at 30 °C on a delicate programme, dry on a wide hanger to avoid shoulder marks. Do not fold it at the head part: store it hung, otherwise a permanent crease eventually forms exactly where it shows.

Jilbab or abaya: how to decide

Ask yourself a single question: do you want to vary your outfits, or save time?

If it is to vary — the abaya, paired with several hijabs, will give you far more combinations. If it is to save time — the jilbab is unbeatable.

Many women end up having both: the jilbab for busy days, the abaya for those when they feel like composing. Our coordinated sets offer, moreover, an interesting compromise: the simplicity of an already matched outfit, with the freedom of a separate scarf.
