Buying a swim hijab: which fabric and fit to choose?

Buying a swim hijab seems simple, until the first time you go into the water and notice the fabric clings, rides up or shows through. The choice of fabric and fit determines everything. Here is what to look out for.

What exactly is a swim hijab?

A swim hijab is a scarf specially designed to be worn in the water. It differs from an ordinary hijab on three points: it is made of quick-drying swim textile, it fits close enough not to come loose, and it stays opaque when wet.

That last point is the most often underestimated. Many ordinary fabrics become translucent as soon as they are soaked — exactly what you want to avoid.

The fabric: what it really comes down to

Polyamide with elastane

The standard for swimwear, and for good reason. This combination is chlorine-resistant, dries quickly and keeps its shape after dozens of swims. Watch the elastane percentage: around 15 to 20 percent gives the best balance between stretch and hold.

Polyester swim textile

Even more resistant to chlorine and sunlight, but slightly less supple. A good choice if you swim regularly in a pool.

What you had better avoid

Cotton and jersey. They soak up water, become heavy, dry slowly and lose their coverage. An ordinary jersey hijab is excellent for everyday, but not suited to the water.

The fit: three styles

The slip-on swim hijab

A single piece, pulled on over the head, with a closed chin part. This is the most practical style: nothing can come loose, and you do not need pins. Ideal for beginners and for active swimming.

The two-piece style

A fitted cap plus a separate scarf. More freedom of style, but you have to fasten the scarf well. Suited to the beach or gentle swimming, less to laps.

The integrated version

Attached to a swimsuit or burkini. The most comfortable in movement, because there is no transition between head and body where water could get in.

Seven points to check before ordering

  • Coverage when wet. Ask for a photo in a wet state or read reviews about it.
  • Chlorine resistance. Without this mention, the fabric fades within one season.
  • UV protection. A UPF 50+ label is a big advantage at the sea.
  • Neckline finish. A neckline that is too tight becomes unpleasant after ten minutes.
  • Seams. Flat seams prevent irritation behind the ears.
  • Weight. The lighter it is, the less you feel it in the water.
  • Sizing. Check the head circumference, not just S/M/L.

How to keep it looking good for a long time?

Always rinse the swim hijab in cold water right after use, even after sea water. Chlorine and salt attack the fibres as soon as they dry. Then let it dry flat in the shade — never in the dryer and never in full sun.

Never wash it together with rough fabrics such as towels; they pull threads out of the elastane.

Swim hijab or ordinary scarf for the beach?

If you are mainly on the beach and rarely really swim, a light, quick-drying scarf can suffice. Then pair it with loose clothing in a breathable fabric. Our complete sets are particularly suited to this: soft lines, covering, and yet cool.

If you really go into the water, there is no alternative to specialist swim textile.

In summary

Choose polyamide or polyester with elastane, watch the coverage when wet, and take a closed style if you swim actively. With these three rules, you rarely go wrong.
